sushi night...

Last night was sushi night for me and the Boser. We got a fire going in the fireplace, watched new episodes of our favorite NBC Thursday comedies (aka all of them), and pigged out on sushi. It was a pretty excellent evening.

Over the summer, my sister took a sushi-making class and passed her knowledge on to me. Would you like for me to pass the knowledge on to you as well? Okay, okay. Calm down. You don't have to beg.

1. Pick your ingredients.

Regardless of your sushi filling choices, you'll need calrose rice (preferably the Botan brand), rice vinegar, and nori, or seaweed.

You can pick up all of these ingredients in the Asian food section of your grocery store, or, if your grocery store has a sushi cart where you can buy pre-made sushi, they probably have the ingredients on display over there as well.

Then choose what fun stuff you want to go inside. The Boser and I usually opt for vegetarian sushi at home, because the two of us couldn't eat a whole tuna steak in a timely manner. (If you do want to go with tuna, get a sushi-grade tuna steak from the butcher at your grocery store. Only use it for sushi if you buy it still frozen, or if the butcher thawed it that day. Use the same day as thawing.) We did avocado, jalapeno, cream cheese, and cucumber last night.

2. Prepare the rice.

Cook the rice several hours before you plan on making your sushi. You want the rice to have time to cool on the counter at room temperature. Putting it in the fridge will make it hard, though I have refrigerated it in a pinch (aka when I always forget to make it early) and it's not bad.

I usually make four rolls, which is plenty for the Boser and I to share. Here's the recipe for the rice:

Cook 1 1/2 cups of rice in 2 cups water, as directed on the package. When rice is done cooking, add in 1/4 cup of rice vegar 1 1/4 tablespoons of sugar, and a couple dashes of salt.

3. Make your sushi!

Cut up your veggies/meat/etc in thin strips. Lay out a piece of nori on a bamboo sushi mat (you can pick this up at the grocery store for a few bucks) and a pat a thin layer of rice onto the nori, covering all but 1 inch at the top and bottom. You'll want to wet your fingers during this process to keep the rice from sticking to you.

Place your cut up ingredients in the center of the nori/rice, in a line going all the way across the nori. Using your sushi mat, roll the bottom of the nori up over the ingredients. Unroll the mat and keep rerolling a little furthur each time until the whole piece of nori is wrapped up. Use a serrated knife to gently saw through the roll to cut it into pieces.

You just made sushi! Yay! :)

mmmm chevron...

As of late, I've had what you might call an obsession with chevron. It started when I bought this fabric:

From which I made these bags:

All of which sold. And then I couldn't find any other fabric that was remotely similar. And I was sad. But, as an artist, I decided it was time to buck up and get creative. So then I made these bags, among others:

and the fun has not stopped since. Which is why I am introducing a new little collection of chevron happiness to my pre-existing Fabric Collage Cuff line on Etsy.

Aren't they preeeeetty? You can take one home today for $20.00, if you so please. Either way, here's a little chevron treasury I created to brighten your day and lighten your wallet.

a beginners guide to reading my blog...

Oh hey there.

I have decided it's time to enter the current century and start a blog. I'd like to give those of you that are kind enough to read said blog a bit of a introductory guide to my ramblings, because everyone wants to hear a ramble about what I'm going to ramble about :)

1. My Work

While earning a BFA in Fiber Art at the University of North Texas, I started making purses and selling them to earn a bit of extra cash. Now, with a year of post-grad life under my belt, running "Rachel Elise" is my full time job. And it rules. I sell my bags online, at local craft shows, and wholesale to boutiques and other retail outlets throughout the country (and even a couple of times overseas. NBD.) You can visit my Etsy Shop to shop/drool/spy on/purchase my bags, you can follow my business on Facebook, or you can look at the adorable little website that the Boser (more on him later) helped me set up.

In addition to work I do at Rachel Elise, I'm kind of a craft/Etsy nut. In fact, in 2010, I started the local craft team Etsy Denton with my dear friend Shelley. We've put together a total of three craft shows, as well as a few other events that benefited our members. It's a lot of work, but Shelley and I make a pretty killer leadership duo, if I do say so myself.

2. My Fam

For almost a year now, I have been married to the Boser, aka Bo. He's a pretty fantastic dude. He works for a video production company by day, and has a passion/crazy talent for playing guitar by night. We enjoy being BFF and watching TV series on Netflix.

In addition to the Boser and me, there is Cat. Cat, or Dagny, as we sometimes choose to call her, is a small little cross-eyed kitty that keeps me company during the day. As I work at home alone, we spend a lot of time together, so yes, you'll get to hear about her a lot. And yes, you'll get to see an annoying amount of pictures of her doing cute things.

3. My Noms

I'm a totally foodie, and I am not ashamed. You should not be ashamed, either. Which is why you are going to continue reading this blog about crafts and foods :D In addition to a love of finding the best restaurants with the Boser, I love to cook and get creative in the kitchen. One of my favorite kitchen activities is MARATHONSOUPSUNDAY, in which I make several soups on a Sunday afternoon while the Boser occupies himself with hours of football. I then freeze said soups, and we eat them throughout the next few weeks when no one feels like cooking. It's a pretty excellent plan.

Of the food groups, the cheeseburger food group is a particular favorite of the Boser and I. In fact, this was the Boser's groomscake at our wedding:

The Boser is also a giant fan of sandwiches and Asian food, all of which were complicated about four months ago when I discovered that I am gluten intolerant. But this discovery has taught me to learn more about food and about my self every day, so it's not all bad.

Okay, if you've made it this far, congratulations, you are a blog-reading champion. I'll let you go about your business now, as I need to start going about mine for the day.

Hugs and Loves,

Rachel Elise
