making orders and finding order...

If you frequent my Etsy shop, you may have noticed that I generally add a new batch of bags every week to week and a half. So by now you are probably wondering when I'm going to get around to adding that next batch.

Well, I'm not there yet. I'm not sure why. I mean, I haven't really been doing anything lately....

Oh wait.

I made these headbands.

And then I made these bracelets, too.

Ah, wholesale. Such a glorious thing.

In addition to filling this order (and starting the one i have for next week... eep!), I reorganized my office a bit this morning to bring it a bit more efficiency. I now have two clearly defined workspaces: sewing and designing/shipping prepartion. Before, everything was a little bit everywhere, but now it makes more sense.

Also, remember that you can still cash in on free shipping in the shop today and tomorrow! Use the code "SHIP12JAN" during checkout.

a gray sort of day...

The sun isn't quite making an appearance and there's a promise of rain tonight. But that's okay with me... I enjoy a gray day now and again :)

Gray as a color isn't too shabby either (unless it's shabby chic hehe). I love using gray in my bags, and I love wearing it. It can be feminine, masculine, go with brown, go with black, go with everything.

I've made these two gendercentric treasuries to celebrate gray. Enjoy!

burger review: the grape...

As I've mentioned before, the Boser and I are constantly on the hunt for our next favorite burger. So yesterday, our anniversary, seemed like the appropriate time to finally make it to The Grape and try what Texas Monthly crowned as the Best Burger in Texas.

The full burger list is no longer on Texas Monthly's website, but ever since the Boser and I found out that the #1 burger was in DFW, we had been plotting a way to get to it.

The only problem was that the burger is only served on The Grape's Sunday brunch menu. (It is now also available on Mondays, due to popularity.) Due to the limited availablity, Bo and I just hadn't managed to make it down there. Until yesterday.

In the excitement of eating my burger, I forgot to take a picture. But God bless Google Images. This is exactly what my burger looked like.

Sidebar: Yes, I am gluten intolerant. No, this burger was not served on a gluten-free bun. My condition is not life-threating, just uncomfortable, so I make exceptions in my gluten-free diet for the following reasons:

1. Being at an event with a specific menu (i.e. a wedding, Thanksgiving dinner, invited to someone's home for dinner, etc.)

2. Being out of town. (Local cuisine is a big part of travel.)

3. Eating out with a large group of people. (By the time everyone actually agrees on the restaurant, I don't care if I can eat gluten-free there or not. I'm just hungry.)

4. BURGERS.

Review: It was in fact a very delicious burger. I can see why Texas Monthly crowned it. It was a very Texas-ie burger. And the FRIES. The fries should have won Best French Fries in Texas from Texas Monthly. But I don't think that's a thing.

So was it the best burger I've ever had? It was really freaking delicious, but no. The Boser thought that yes, it was the best burger he'd ever had (and he supports my statement about the fries, as well).

For me, the best burger still resides at Kenny's Burger Joint  in Frisco, Texas. (Yes, there are actually some good things about Frisco. Like Kenny's. And the Boser's employment).

Where's your favorite burger?

Rachel Elise

love and marriage...

Today, my friends Laura and Jose are tying the knot! I'm so excited for them! Plus, this weekend is also special for the Boser and I.... a year ago tomorrow, we were tying the knot ourselves.

We're really stoked to share our anniversary weekend with close friends. I'm a bridesmaid, the Boser is helping out a bit with music, and love is all kinds of in the air.

I'm not yet a wise enough or old enough sage to give strong marital advice (though I do think the Boser and I handle our life together with complete awesomeness about 98.7% of the time). However, having planned and survived my own wedding, and having a year to reflect on said wedding, I'd like to take this moment to share my thoughts on how to have a successful hitchin'.

1. Know that, above all, you will not have the wedding you've always dreamed of. Now, before you write off the rest of my advice and claim me too cynical, hear me out. Think about all the people that are going to contribute to planning your wedding: you, your fiance, your mother, your father, your mother-in-law, your father-in-law, all your vendors, a wedding planner (if you go that route), and money (money's not a person, but it is a big decision-maker in your planning process). How could you possibly end up with everything being just as you imagined? The important thing is to remember why you're doing all of this in the first place: at the end of the day, no matter what you wedding looked, sounded, tasted, felt, and smelled like, you get to marry the love of your life. And that's all that really matters.

2.  Decide on your overall budget, then pick 1-3 things that are the most important to you. Splurge on those things; make the rest work. For me, it was the venue and the photographer. Old Red Museum was the perfect combo of historical, vintage, romantic, and modern. Carter Rose took absolutely fantastic photos and was just such a nice and professional guy. My dress was relatively inexpensive, my mom and I made the invitations and save-the-dates, our caterer was fairly priced and helped us plan table linens and dishes (Celebration Catering), the flowers were beautiful but just about as cheap as they come (Simply Bouquets), and I got a median-price DJ (Rod Baker) and cakes (Panini Bakery), both of which were more phenomenal than I could ever have imagined.

3. Some things aren't going to go right, but chances are, no one will notice but you. There's dancing, there's drinking, there's food, there's cake, there's garters and bouquets flying through the air. There's a lot going on at a wedding. And chances are, unless you're on the inside of planning and making sure things go a certain way, you will have no idea that things did not go the certain way that you planned on making them go. Just relax, enjoy the day, know that like every other day in your life, things aren't going to go 100% how you planned. But it will be okay.

Actually, it will be more than okay. It will still be perfect.

happy little bunting...

My dear friend Melissa is crazy talented. Graphic designer (for some really cool brands) by day, indie and vintage-inspired jewelry designer by night. Her jewelry work used to go by the name Indie Thrift, but she recently changed her Etsy shop to Wunderkammer Culture. As part of the change, she asked that I make her a custom banner to use at shows and markets to advertise her brand. Even though she's infinitely cooler than I am, I thought I could come up with something pretty clever. Here's what I did:

I love it, and loved making it! I wish there were more hours in the day... I would totally start a second Etsy shop with generic special occasion buntings, custom order buntings, and cute little fabric and paper stitched cards. Maybe when I can afford to hire some studio help :D

In the mean time, let me know if you'd like a happy little bunting of your own. I had a blast with this one.

Thanks for the fun project, Melissa! (And seriously, guys. Check out her shop.)

Rachel Elise

tools of the trade...

Last night I ventured to Super Marshalls in Dallas with my lovely lady friend Lauren Hirsch. A favorite part of journeying to Marshalls/TJ Maxx for both Lauren and me is exploring the home section of the store (which is why Home Goods is the greatest store in the world).

This particular Marshalls had a couple of really great kitchen items by a company called Joseph Joseph:

This simple but inventive cutting board has fold hinges built in so that once you chop up your veggies, your cutting board folds into a chute to transfer your ingredients into your pot or skillet. So clever and useful!

Chop2Pot Plus

Marshalls also had this fantastic Joseph Joseph collapsible cheese grater. As cheap as shredded cheese is today, I rarely use my grater, but I do need it on occasion. For as little as I use it, the grater takes up a lot of space in the cabinet... what a great solution!

When I got home, I checked out their website to see what other clever kitchen goodies they had to offer. Turns out I already owned a couple!

My sister got me this great utility nesting bowl set a year ago. I use it nearly every day! It includes 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 1 cup measuring cups, a measuring bowl with a pitcher spout, a strainer, a colander, and a mixing bowl. Such a huge space saver, and the colors are so lovable!

Nest8 Bowl Set

I also already had one of these great Scoop Colanders. I think the Boser and I picked it up with some Bed, Bath, and Beyond wedding money. Great for getting boiled chicken out of a hot pot, or nabbing your teabags out of a hot pitcher!

Here are a couple other products on the Joseph Joseph website that I'd love to have. Make sure you check out all of their great kitchen tools!
